PLA (Polylactic Acid) is the most widely used filament in the 3D printing world, and for good reason. Derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugar cane, it is biodegradable under specific industrial conditions and emits a sweet, non-toxic aroma during printing.

Why choose PLA?

  • Beginner-Friendly: It has a low melting point and minimal shrinkage, making it incredibly easy to print without warping or peeling—even on printers without an enclosure.
  • Detail & Precision: Excellent for models requiring fine details and sharp edges, making it the standard for decorative items and prototypes.
  • High Compatibility: Almost every FDM printer on the market supports PLA perfectly.

When NOT to use PLA?

  • High-Temperature Environments: PLA has a low glass transition temperature (approx. 50°C – 60°C). It will soften and deform if left in a hot car or exposed to direct summer sunlight.
  • Mechanical Stress: While rigid, standard PLA is relatively brittle. It is not suitable for functional parts that require high impact resistance or constant mechanical fatigue.
  • Outdoor Duration: Extended exposure to UV light and moisture can cause PLA to degrade over time, making it less ideal for permanent outdoor installations compared to ASA or PETG.

Best Practices

  • Print Temp: 190°C – 220°C
  • Bed Temp: 45°C – 60°C (PEI or Glass surfaces work best)
  • Cooling: 100% Part Cooling Fan (Crucial for bridging and overhangs)
  • Storage: Keep dry in a vacuum bag with desiccant to prevent brittleness.
